  • 5 Fall Wardrobe Staples for Cool Girls

fall 2014 style tips seattle blog

While the basic bitches are already out pumpkin-patching with knee-high boots, leggings, ear muffs and PSLs, you’re trying to figure out how to transition from summer to fall. You probably already have the basics I outlined in my summer must have post - like the perfect linen tee and a cross-body bag. Those staple items will be perfect for fall layers – so while the jorts & sandals may have to get tucked away, most other pieces are transformative and are still relevant as the season changes.

These 6 items are perfect additions to your wardrobe for fall – and it’s a simple way to organize a shopping strategy for fall without completely breaking the bank or falling for trends that won’t last more than a season. You should already have a fall coat that you love, as well as scarves, beanies and fun socks. Pair these 6 refreshed items with your classic favorites and boom – you’re cool enough to get a PSL and not end up on a Buzzfeed list called something like 11 Typical Basic Girls Instagram Posts for Fall.

    1. The Perfect Flannel

To wear buttoned & tucked in, open and with layers or tied around your waist with a sweater & skinnies.

My picks: Straight Size: Madewell Boyfriend Flannel Plus Size: ASOS Curve Plaid Flannel

    2. Black Jeans with a Twist

Either distressed black skinnies or boyfriend jeans – or leather paneled black skinnies. Simple black jeans with some detail or twist to go with everything.

My Picks: Straight Size: Distressed Boyfriend Jeans from Nordstrom | Plus Size: ASOS Curve Ripped Knee Skinnies

    3. Updated Booties

An updated pair of short boots with little to no heel – for comfy wearing throughout the day. Pick either brown or black – whichever one your closet is missing.

My Picks: Black Booties: Madewell Nico Bootie | Brown Booties: Top Shop Vintage Booties

    4. Dark Stripes

Stripes are always in, we always need a little bit of Parisian in our closets no matter the season. Instead of your classic white & black stripe, try a darker grey & black.

My Picks: Straight Size: J.Crew Linen Swingy Stripe Shirt (on sale!)  | Plus Size: Nordstrom Stripe Block Tee

    5. Relaxed Knit

A knit sweater that is perfectly relaxed and makes you want to drink cocoa and watch Miracle on 34th Street.  Find a simple one, with some interesting but subtle details.

I’ve been eyeing this J.Crew chambray baseball cap for a while. But after months of flipping through Madewell catalogues and seeing countless pins of girls looking chic-as-ever in their it’s whatever hats, it was too much to take – so I took the plunge and joined the team.

Being a member of team cool-girl is pretty sweet. I get to show up wearing leggings, t-shirts and baseball caps and still get to call myself stylish. I’ve even gone up a level in my quest for it’s whatever style – I’m now on the hunt for the perfect pair of wear-out-pajama pants. Cause pajama pants are legit cool-girl shit now. If that’s not incentive enough to hop on this relaxed-trend bandwagon, I don’t know what is.

So go buy up all the linen tees, all the sweat pants, all the birks, all the slouchy, relaxed-fit, soft-texture stuff you can get. Before it’s too late and pants suits make their grand comeback. Hurry – but don’t appear too frantic. That’s so not normcore.

  • When It’s Too Hot for Clothes

…but you have to wear them anyways.

seattle fashion blogger outfit post curvy girl summer style 1

Outfit Details - Striped Linen Blouse: Madewell (similar fit); Printed Shorts: H&M; Necklace: Anthropologie (similar); Purse: H&M; Sandals: GAP (out of stock, but loving these)

It has been hovering around 90°F over the last week here in Seattle. And let me just say – IT IS HOT AS HADES. Us mild-weather-folk of the great Northwest start busting out the shorts & sandals at about 65°F, so this LA-like weather is a bit much. And I’m not even upset about the heat, really, I’m more distraught by the lack of work-appropriate hot-weather clothes in my closet. Since I walk to work, keeping cool is a huge factor (even with an air conditioned office). And with the majority of my shorts being homemade jean cut-offs (so not work approved), it’s been a struggle getting dressed lately (beyond the sweaty-back-bra-challenge, ladies you know what I mean).

So thank the H&Meavens (see what I did there?) for these breezy and bright floral shorts. I shall return to H&M soon, and see if they have them in any other colors/prints. Which isn’t good, because I’m challenging myself to a no-shopping July, but when the weather gets this hot, all bets are off.

Stay cool, you wonderful people. Especially if you’re a fellow Seattleite.
