    The Exhibit

Last week I was invited to take a tour of the new amazing exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum, Elles: Pompidou. There are 130 pieces of art on loan from Paris by 75 extraordinary women artists, ranging from 1907 to 2007. We were guided through the exhibit and told stories of women artists, repression, protests through art, history, women’s rights and global art. I enjoyed every single piece – from classic oil paintings, to cubism resembling Picasso, to THE Frida, photography, video and sculpture. The exhibit is laid out in a way so you can take a journey through time and history, and experience the real meaning of each piece and each woman’s story.

My very favorite piece by far, was the photograph exhibit below. It is an alternating series of framed photos, with journal entries in French below. Our tour guide told us that the women to took the pictures was staying in a hotel in Paris when her boyfriend called her on the red phone (shown below) and broke up with her. She was so devasted that she took a picture of the “crime-scene” and then proceeded to write journal entries on her grieving process. The black background represents grieving while the white background represents moving on – as you can tell by the reoccuring phone photo as she recalls her heartbreak. However as time passes, and as her heart heals, the writing on the black paper begins to fade into the background – until eventually there is no visible writing on the “grieving paper” as she has fully moved on. I really identified with this as a woman, having had to heal a broken heart, and how you go back and forth between sadness and moving on until finally, you are recovered.

    What I Wore

And of course, I had to figure out what to wear to this wonderful event at the Seattle Art Museum. I decided to go with something bold, that both showed off my curves yet at the same time was not a traditionally feminine ensemble.

    • My tiger-striped jacket is vintage (but this one is amazing)
    • I layered a peplum shirt underneath it for volume & shape (similar top here).
    • My gold envelope clutch and go-go boots are from H&M (similar clutch here and cute boots here).

I highly recommend going to see the exhibit before it is gone (until January 13) – make it a girls night and check out SAM’s restaurant, Taste (it’s amazing), while you are there!
