Little can compare to a day spent on the water with your closest crew, wine glass in hand, skin warm from the summer sun. That’s one of the perks of living in Seattle – there’s always a kayak, sailboat or yacht around the corner, ready to board. And in every boat there lies opportunity – outfit opportunity. An excuse to go full-on nautical in stripes, linen, head scarves and giant sunglasses – all at the same time.

Clean. Bright. Preppy. Something that’s blue, white and striped. Hair scarves, red lips, boat shoes and linen shorts. Nautical style is classic and transformative, and it’s something that any yacht-party-going-gal ought to know how to pull off.

To help all of my boat-bound babes out, below are some style tips for consideration before boarding your next nautical adventure. And this advice is very timely – later this month the American Cancer Society is hosting a little daytime yacht party with 100% of the proceeds benefitting the ACS. So if you are in the Seattle area, come join me on Sunday, June 14th for a toast to fight cancer at the Holland America Champagne Lunch! Register here (tickets are going fast, and they are only $30, so grab a spot quickly!).

7 Nautical Styling Tips For Chic Boat Partying

Try one, or YOLO, try all of these on your next boating adventure (which could be the Seattle Hope Champagne Lunch!).

    1. Try a bold, bright color paired with a neutral like white or tan. And that bold color can be something other than blue or red (think bright yellow or green!).
    2. Bring your most fabulous pair of sunglasses. Big. Bold. My favorite for boating are thick, white-framed, giant sunnies.
    3. Red lips look good on sailboats and yachts alike. Actually any bright lip color works on the water.
    4. Don’t forget how windy and/or cold it can get on the water. Flowy skirts can go up with the wind, and forgetting to bring a sweater can leave you chilly!
    5. Try a neck or head scarf. It’s so Audrey. And Bridgette. And every other effortlessly-chic-slash-french girl.
    6. You can’t go wrong with stripes. It’s the easiest way to look like you belong on a boat!
    7. Jeans – in shorts, boyfriend or light form – can pair incredibly well with your nautical ‘fit. Don’t discount the old blue!
    8. Wear comfortable shoes. Some of us can stand (and balance) in heels all day – and some of us just can’t. You know who you are. Don’t end up being the Barefoot Champagne Contessa of the party. There’s no shame in a cute pair of flats or sandals!

  • Fresh Tangerine Stackable Rings Giveaway

    seattle jewerly giveaway blogger blog

Are you read to meet your new favorite jewelry shop? Prepare yourself – because it’s about to get real good.

I actually discovered Fresh Tangerine through an unlikely source – my  boyfriend – after he gifted me their wonderful gold Ampersand Ring on my birthday. It’s playful and pairs perfectly with the majority of my current jewelry. I’ve recommended them to so many friends (and boyfriends of friends looking for good gift ideas!) – and now own a few different Fresh Tangerine pieces.

Fresh Tangerine makes all their jewelry by hand – which is impressive, seeing as their jewelry is so dainty and detailed. I wouldn’t be surprised if they had secretly had cute little elves making their adorable rings, bracelets and necklaces, adding the finishing (tiny) touches like mini-lightening-bolts and gold hearts.

  • Pike Place Market in the Fall

    pike place market seattle tourism

I’ve lived in Seattle nearly all my life, and when a friend or family member comes to visit I often have trouble figuring out where to take them. I know Seattle from my personal point of view – my favorite bars, my favorite dive-y Mexican joints, the best local cafes and my preferred running routes. But when a first-time visitor comes to this beautiful city, the one place that I KNOW they will want to see (and actually love) is Pike Place Market.

So that’s exactly what I did when a friend who I met studying abroad in Ireland back in 2008 came to visit. We had so much fun playing tourist around the market, walking down to the waterfront, checking out the Great Wheel and strolling through the SAM Olympic Sculpture Park. I took the opportunity to take some colorful shots of what tourism in Seattle looks like during October – crunchy leaves, cloudy skies and breaks of golden sun make for some incredible photos. I hope you enjoy them – and perhaps it’s time to play tourist in your own city before the lovely early fall season is over.
