DIY Blue Blazer & the Email Purse

I’ve been reading a lot of different fashion blogs, and so many of them have wonderful DIY ideas. So I finally decided to take the plunge and try my hand at taking a simple blazer and turning into something chic & unique.

I found this blue jacket at a local thrift store, for about $4. I also found my “Lion King” earrings for $2 there as well (and yes, I like to nickname my clothing, a trends you will undoubtably continue to see). I made a few small adjustments to the blazer with a sewing needle, some awesome buttons from Joann’s & a couple cinches at the waist for shape.

If you want to DIY your own vintage jacket, here are my suggestions:

  • Get a blazer that is one size to big, as long as it doesn’t sag too much in the shoulders. Oversized blazers (aka boyfriend blazers) are very hot right now & look great paired with everything from skinny jeans to leggings to a black tube dress.
  • Don’t be scared away by bright colors! Swoop that hot pink blazer.
  • Use a lot of buttons. Sure, one button may be all the jacket originally came with. But take that one off and add 5 more. You don’t need to actually button your blazer, wearing it open is chic, casual & cool.
  • Use good thread. I didn’t at first, and you will benefit from using high quality thread, and being sure to loop around the button’s hook at least 5-6 times (I unfortunately had to re-sow a couple of my buttons on).

The Email Purse? A wonderful little find I discovered at my local H&M, which looks just like the little “email icon” I see everywhere. It also looks like an envelop, but hey, I’m a blogger, so I’ll stick with calling it my “email” purse.
